OVERVIEW
This project had one constraint: design a cookbook using only typography.
The book was Fresh Sheet, a collection of recipes from Vancouver's best chefs. The challenge was making it feel like a real, appetising cookbook without any of the visual tools a cookbook would normally rely on. Everything, the warmth, the hierarchy, the sense of occasion, had to come from the type itself.
My approach was clean and editorial. On the chapter opening pages, large expressive script type does the heavy lifting, giving each section its own character and energy. On the recipe pages, the focus shifts to structure, different weights and sizes guide the reader from the title down through the ingredients and into the method, without ever feeling cluttered or hard to follow.
The project made me think differently about what typography can actually do. When you take away images, type stops being a supporting element and becomes the whole thing and that forces you to be much more intentional about every decision you make
